Outside of going to school or work, it is important to make time for some fun. Here at The Village we try our best to equip you with the tools necessary to have fun and not get bored. This includes our awesome amenities as well as additional ideas of how to have fun inside and outside.
Sometimes the weather in Rexburg makes it difficult to have fun outside. Other times it is nice to just stay inside for a change. If this is the case, here are different options of inside fun. These can be modified to work for groups, families, or couples. The first is bowling, with a twist. It is called “skittle bowling”. The game is simple. At the beginning of each turn the player grabs a skittle. Each color represents a different silly action that each player must perform before they bowl. You can make up the actions or use the following as a reference guide.
Another way to have some fun inside is to do some cooking. You can make it a competition and have a cook off to see who can cook to best dish or just find a new recipe and make it together. The Internet and Pinterest is filled with unique and fun recipes to try, so go out of your comfort zone and try something new. Chicken stuffed with Brie, spinach and cranberries is a fun recipe to try. It is always fun to share food with friends, so consider inviting friends over to enjoy it with you.
The easiest and most simple way to have fun inside is by hosting a game night or a movie night. Pop some popcorn or make a quick treat and your night is planned. If you want to spice up your game night or movie night coordinate the treats with the theme of the game or movie. Or use our awesome theater room to host your movie night!
Whether you are a student at BYU-Idaho or part of the community, you can take part in the fun they provide inside on campus. There are fitness classes available Monday-Saturday. In the Hart Building, they offer Aerobics, Cycling, Zumba, Yoga, High Fit classes, and more. The BYU-Idaho fitness center also provides equipment to play additional sports such as wally ball, basketball, and volleyball. BYU-Idaho also hosts a variety of dances beginning with instructions to teach you how to dance and then an actual dance afterwards. This takes place in the Manwaring Center. If you are not feeling any of those options, they have roller skating on Monday and Saturday nights from 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom at the Manwaring Center.
If being active is not what you’re looking for, yet you still don’t want to be bored at home, there are several galleries and museums on campus and around town. The Legacy Flight Museum and the Museum of Rexburg are just two options for you, your family, or your friends to check out.
Winters and summers in Rexburg couldn’t be more opposite. However, they each present unique activities that are fun for each season. It is also always nice to get outside and enjoy some fresh air.
Winters in Rexburg are usually full of snow. As a result, the outdoor activities usually involve… you guessed it, snow. Don’t let yourself be bored during the cold months. And don’t underestimate the value of the ORC (Outdoor Resource Center) on campus when it comes to renting equipment for winter activities.
Just 15 minutes from The Village Apartments there is the Labelle Lake Ice Palace. The Labelle Ice Palace is a wonderland of ice, lights, and snow. While there you can walk through ice tunnels, get a ride on the horse-drawn sleigh, take pictures with famous winter characters, or head to the resort for some hot chocolate. It is located at 688 N 4200 E, in Rigby, ID. Tickets for the ice castles are $13 for adults ages 12+, $8 for children ages 5-11, and free for children 4 and under. There is a discounted rate for students which is $11 as well as a discount for those who go as a group of five or more. The sleigh rides are an additional cost of $4 on the weekdays, $5 on the weekend, and free for children 4 and under. They are open Mondays and Tuesdays from 6pm-9pm, Fridays from 6pm-10pm, and Saturdays from 5pm-10pm. You certainly won’t get bored here!
If you are looking for something more active, head up to Kelly Canyon for some skiing and snowboarding. Kelly Canyon is great for both beginners and those who are more experienced. They have a variety of runs ranging from easy to expert as well as a half pipe and a terrain park. They are open Monday through Thursday from 12:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. – 9:30 p.m. If you want to travel a little farther for a bigger resort, Grand Targhee is another great option for skiing and snowboarding.
There are also other options that don’t break the bank and are easy to do right outside your apartment. Snow angels are a classic way to have fun and enjoy freshly fallen snow. Building a snowman is another classic idea, but you can spruce it up by crating different snow creature instead. With the amount of snow that we see here in Rexburg there is plenty to build an igloo or snow fort. Or, just have a fun snowball fight with friends, family, or neighbors. If you want to make some art in the snow, fill spray bottles with different colored water and draw all over the snow. Lastly, the snow allows for a good time sledding or tubing followed by a warm cup of hot chocolate.
When the snow melts and the weather becomes warm again, Rexburg blossoms with beauty. This is a great time to spend your time outside instead of being bored inside.
Just down the road from The Village is a park called Evergreen Park. It is the perfect place for a relaxing day. There are fields for playing soccer, tossing a football, throwing a Frisbee, or playing some spike ball. For the children there is a play structure as well as plenty of room to let you dog run wild. Once it gets dark, the park is the perfect place to go stargazing and search for the Big Dipper or Orion’s Belt.
The Village also provides picnic tables and barbecue grills for hosting parties or just grilling up some dinner for your family.
It’s always fun to go on a walk or a hike and take some pictures. Surprisingly, Rexburg in the summer is the perfect place for that. For those of you who have never experienced Geocaching before, the summers are the perfect time to go search for some treasure in places close to your home. Check out this link for geocaches close to you.
No matter if it is inside or outside, there are plenty of ways to not let yourself get bored in Rexburg. Make some memories this year that you will never forget.
