How to Obtain a Minimalistic Closet

Tidying Up with Marie Kondo has hit the nation by storm and is causing a lot of people to get rid of the unnecessary clutter in their homes. We’ve decided to give you a little direction!

Apartment closets can tend to be a little on the small side and it is so easy to rack up hundreds of articles of clothing over several years. This can lead those small closets to be cluttered and even cause them to overflow leaving you to have to find additional space for all your clothes. It can sometimes be hard to get rid of clothes due to that small chance that you might end up wearing it again at some point in the future. The reality is, if you don’t wear something for 6 months or longer, odds are you probably aren’t going to wear it again. This has the exception of seasonal clothing where you only don’t wear it because it’s not the right season to. Well it is time that you unclutter your mess of a closet and start getting rid of the things you don’t wear. Here are a few tips on how to do that.

  1. A good way to start is to take all of your clothes out of your closet and separate them into three boxes, must have, donate, and not sure. This is a good way to start so that you know what items you for sure want to keep.
  2. Next, everything that doesn’t fit you the way that you want it to, put in the donate pile. Odds are if it doesn’t fit you now, it’s not going to fit you in 6 months so you don’t need to keep it.
  3. Another important thing to remember is that you only need one “trashy” tee-shirt. These tend to be the oversized shirts used for painting, yard work or to sleep in. It can be easy to obtain a huge pile of these but in reality you only really need one or two.
  4. Try to keep things that you can wear on a daily basis according to your routine. For example, if you work in an office where you have to dress business casual it would make more sense to keep more outfits that fit that standard as opposed to a bunch of hoodies and tee-shirts.
  5. Finally, SHOES. No one needs more than 7 pairs of shoes even though it can be hard to not let them pile up in your closet year after year.

Following these few easy tips can help you tremendously reduce your cluttered closet!
